How would you obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water?
We will obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water by the process of filtration.
A filter paper is one such filter that has very fine pores in it. The image given below shows the steps involved in using a filter paper. A filter paper folded in the form of a cone is fixed in a funnel. The mixture is then poured onto the filter paper. Solid particles in the mixture do not pass through it and remain on the filter paper.
Principle: Filtration is the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid, by letting the mixture pass through the pores of a membrane, called a filter. The filtered liquid is collected at the bottom of the flask and the suspended particles remain in the filter (paper or membrane).
Advantages:
- It is used to remove solid suspended particles from liquid.
- It is a cost-effective method.
- It is an easy method. For example, this process is used to remove tea leaves from tea in households.
