How to compare decimals ?
Comparison of whole numbers :
A decimal number has a whole number part and a decimal part. The decimal number with the greater whole part is greater.
Example :
10.2 is greater than 5.1.
- If the whole parts are equal, convert the given decimals into like decimals and then compare.
- We compare the digits in the tenths place. The decimal number with the greater digit in the tenths place is greater.
Example :
8.32 is greater than 8.15.
- If the digits in the tenths place are equal, compare the digits in the hundredths place. The decimal number with the greater digit in the hundredths place is greater.
Example :
4.32 is greater than 4.31.
- If the digits in the tenths and the hundredths place are same, the decimal number with the greater digit in the thousandths place is greater.
Example :
10.543 is greater than 10.541.
