How to add monomials?
To add or subtract monomials, follow the same rules as with normal numbers. But we can only add the terms are like.
In algebra, like terms are terms that have the same variables and powers. The coefficients do not need to match.
Example: 1) 12x and -5x
2) 4x 2 and ½ x 2
When we have two like monomials, add or subtract the coefficients only and leave the variables the same.
$4x ^3 y ^2 z + 7 x ^3 y ^2 z$
These monomials are Like, i.e. they have the same exponents. The only difference between these two monomials is that they have different coefficients. To write an answer, we will just add the numbers up and write the answer as:
$11 x ^3 y ^2 z$
