The water level remains the same when the floating ice cube melts in the beaker. A floating object displaces an amount of water equal to its own weight. Since water expands when it freezes, one ounce of frozen water has a larger volume than one ounce of liquid water.
The space taken up by the object under the water is the same as the amount of water of the same weight. So in ice cube terms: the volume of the water that the ice cube displaces is the same as the weight of water in the ice cube. Given that these two are exactly the same, the level, therefore, remains constant.
