How nutrients are replenished in soil?? How do they get nitrogen??

The nutrients in the soil can be replenished by crop rotation. The fertility of land is maintained by changing crops for every season. In one season one type of crop drains the nutrients from soil which can be restored by another type of crop in the next season.

Nutrients in the soil can also be replenished by the addition of fertilizers and manures. They consist of nutrients and minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Another way of replenishing nutrients is cultivation of leguminous crops such as gram, peas, and pulses.

The nitrogen fixing bacterium called as Rhizobium forms a symbiotic relationship with the leguminous plant. The Rhizobium takes atmospheric nitrogen and converts it into soluble forms such as ammonium. The ammonium can be incorporated into amino acids and utilized by the plant. In return plants provide food and shelter to the Rhizobium.
