How long will it take a force of 10 N to stop a mass of 2.5 kg which is moving at 20 m/s?
Here given Force $F=10\ N$
Mass of the body $m=2.5\ kg$
Initial velocity $u=20\ m/s$
Final velocity $v=0$
Time $=?$
Using Newton's law of motion $F=ma$
Acceleration, $a=\frac{F}{m}$
$=\frac{10\ N}{2.5\ kg.}$
$=4\ m/s^2$
On using the first equation of motion, $v=u+at$
$0=20-4\times t$ [ take $a$ negative as it reduces the speed, so it is retardation]
Or $t=\frac{20}{4}$
Or $t=5\ s$
Therefore, it will take $5\ s$ for a force of $10\ N$ to stop a mass of $2.5\ kg$ which is moving at $20\ m/s$.
