How does the altitude of a place affect its temperature?

As there is less pressure higher in the atmosphere, allowing the air molecules to spread out more. So, the higher one travels, the lower the temperature becomes i.e. the higher we go the colder it is. The rate at which the temperature drops is known as the adiabatic lapse rate. It is 6.5 degrees Celsius for every 1,000 meters of ascent.
