How does roughage fill up the most need for water in our body?

Roughage does not fulfill the water requirement of the body but it helps in retaining the water content in our body.

For example: When beans are soaked in water, they will absorb water and became big in size and soft nature. Similarly, roughage or fiber functions as a sponge in the alimentary canal. Roughage absorbs water and keeps food and digestive material soft and smooth to move through the intestines and colon.
