How does gaseous exchange takes place in earthworms?

An earthworm mostly lives in burrows under damp soil. Also, earthworm does not possess specialized respiratory organs similar to higher organisms like humans.

As the gaseous exchange is crucial for an earthworm to survive, the exchange of gases occurs through its moist skin.

An earthworm possesses thin and moist skin which is supplied with a network of capillaries to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere and supply it to the remaining parts of the body. An earthworm expels carbon dioxide from the body into the atmosphere through moist skin itself.
