How do substances travel across the cell membrane?

Substances travel across the plasma membrane (cell membrane) through three different processes: Simple passive diffusion, Facilitated diffusion (by channels and carriers), and Active transport.

The plasma membrane is called a selectively permeable membrane because it permits only certain molecules to move in and out of the cell. All molecules are not free to diffuse into the cell.
