How do buoyant force balance the gravitational force?

The buoyant force refers to the upward force that opposes the downward force of gravity. This force depends upon the density of the fluid, the gravitational constant, and the volume of the fluid element.

An object will sink, float, or rise when submerged in a fluid, all are determined by the magnitude of the buoyant force

  • If the gravitational force acting on an object is greater than the buoyant force, then the object will sink.
  • If the gravitational force acting on an object is equal to the buoyant force, then the object will float.
  • If the gravitational force acting on an object is less than the buoyant force, then the object will rise.

A force is said to be balanced when any pushes and pulls are balanced by another force in the opposite direction.

Therefore, here the buoyant force is balanced by another force in the opposite direction, the gravitational force.
