How can we determine whether leaves other than green leaves can make food by photosynthesis?
Leaves are green because of the presence of the pigment called Chlorophyll.
It absorbs light (red and blue) for energy; the unabsorbed green bounces away and is detected by our eyes and thus appearing green.
But there are so many plants that may contain the different colours of leaves, because of multiple pigments, found in them.
While some different-coloured leaves such as purple, blue, or red contain a higher concentration of pigment anthocyanin, other than chlorophyll.
In these leaves, chlorophyll is found, but in the least amount in comparison to other pigments, and anthocyanin is a pigment that is very good at absorbing green light but is bad at absorbing red, blue, or purple light, that's why they have a different colour, and yet they are capable of photosynthesis.
