Given: Half of a herd of a deer are grazing in the field and three fourth of the remaining are playing nearby the rest 9 are drinking water from a pond.

To do: To find the number of deer in the herd.

Solution:

Let total no. of deer $=x$

Half of herd $=\frac{x}{2}$

$\frac{3}{4}$ of remaining half herd $=( \frac{x}{2})( \frac{3}{4})=\frac{3x}{8}$

$\therefore$ Remaining deer $=9$

$\Rightarrow x=( \frac{x}{2})+( \frac{3x}{8})+9$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{( 4x+3x+72)}{8}$

$\Rightarrow 8x=7x+72$

$\Rightarrow 8x-7x=72$

$\Rightarrow x=72$

$\therefore$ Total no. of deer are $72$.
