Give the evidence for the existence of nucleus in an atom.

Rutherford's alpha scattering experiment gives evidence for the existence of atoms in the nucleus.

When Rutherford bombarded a very thin gold foil with rays containing alpha particles, he made the following observations:-
  1. Few rays got deviated from their path.
  2. One out of 12000 rays was reflected by 180
From the above observations, he concluded that:-
  1. Deviation of rays from their path shows some positive charge present inside the atom.
  2. The reflection of rays by 180, shows that there is something solid in nature present inside the atom. These rays being one out of 100 shows that it's very small in size but has all of the atom's mass and positive charge concentrated.
Rutherford named it as the nucleus and hence is credited with its discovery.
