For the electroplating of silver on a copper spoon, which electrode is chosen for silver and which one for copper? Also, give the name of the electrolyte required for the process.

Electroplating

Electrolysis is used to electroplate objects (coat them with a thin layer or metal), which is useful for coating a cheaper metal with a more expensive one (such as copper or silver), to prevent corrosion, make objects appear shiny and resistant to scratches.

How it works

1. The negative electrode (or, cathode) should be the object to be electroplated. (Here, copper spoon is chosen)

2. The positive electrode (or, anode) should be the metal that you want to coat the object with. (Here, silver is chosen)

3. The electrolyte should be a solution of a salt of the coating metal, such as its metal nitrate or sulfate. (Here, the coating metal or electrolyte should be silver nitrate)

Here, the object to be plated is a copper spoon, so it should be connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. While the metal to be plated is, silver, so it should be connected to the positive terminal. The electrolyte will be a solution

a silver nitrate solution.
