Solution:

Let the diameter  be $d\ cm$

As we know that 

Circumference of circle with diameter $d$ is $\pi d$.

Given Circumference of a circle is $44\ cm$

$\Rightarrow \pi d=44$

$\Rightarrow \frac{22}{7}\times d=44$

$\Rightarrow d=\frac{44\times7}{22}$

$\Rightarrow d=14$

Thus, the diameter is $14\ cm$
