Explain why rusting of iron objects is faster in coastal areas than in deserts.

Air and moisture are required for rusting to take place. In coastal areas, the quantity of moisture present in the air is more than that in deserts. In desert areas, the amount of moisture in the air is even lower.

Therefore, rusting of iron objects is faster in coastal areas than in deserts.

[Extra information: Rusting is an oxidation reaction. The iron reacts with water and oxygen to form hydrated iron(III) oxide, which we see as rust. Rust is an iron oxide, a usually reddish-brown oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen.

Here is the word equation for the reaction:

Iron + water + oxygen → hydrated iron(III) oxide.

 Fe  +  H2O +   O2      →  Fe2O3·H2O

The conditions necessary for rusting of iron to take place is:

  • presence of air (oxygen)
  • presence of water (moisture)

Given below, the picture shows rusting of iron nails.
