Explain why, despite good rains, we are not able to meet the demand for water of all the people in our country.
Despite good rains, we are not able to meet the demand for water of all the people in our country because of the following reasons:
(i) The population of India is very high and it is increasing very rapidly.
(ii) Very less proportion of land is covered with vegetation, thus only a little water seeps into the ground and stored as groundwater.
(iii) Some high-yielding varieties of crops such as rice and wheat require a huge quantity of water for irrigation.
(iv) Untreated effluents and sewage wastewater from industries and households are discharged into the water bodies, polluting the available source of water.
