Explain why burning of wood and cutting it into small pieces are considered as two different types of changes.

The burning of wood is a chemical change because in burning new substances are formed.
The chemical reaction is given below:
Wood + Oxygen $\rightarrow$ Charcoal + Carbon dioxide + Heat + Light

Cutting of wood into small pieces is a physical change because no new substance is formed. We can only reduce the size of wood.

[Extra information: An example showing both physical and chemical changes is the burning of a candle.
Physical changes: While burning the candle the wax slowly melts as the candle gets smaller and this molten wax can be again solidified and will make it into a candle which means that it is a reversible change.
Chemical changes: The heat produced by the candle consumes both the oxygen in the atmosphere, as well as the fuels coming from the flame. This will then lead to carbon dioxide emissions produced by the flame. This is an irreversible change.]
