Explain why, ethene decolourises bromine water whereas ethane does not.


Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, it combines with bromine in the bromine water thereby discharging its reddish-brown colour.

Ethane is a saturated hydrocarbon compound, it does not react with bromine in the bromine water and has no effect on the colour of bromine water.
