Explain Vermicomposting.

Vermicomposting is a method of preparing compost with the help of various species of worms, like earthworms, white worms, and red wigglers.

Steps to Prepare Vermicompost:
1. Collect domestic and vegetable waste materials.
2. Mix these wastes with cow dung slurry and keep them aside for around 20 days.
Cow dung enables partial digestion of these organic wastes and makes them fit for earthworm consumption.
3. Take a base made of concrete or plastic. Cover the bed with loose soil. Add the partially digested waste material and the earthworms.
Loose soil enables earthworms to easily go into the soil. Also, while watering, loose soil helps dissolvable nutrients from organic waste materials enter into it along with water.
4. The earthworms feed on the digested matter and convert it into worm castings (excreta of worms).
5. After 2-3 months, the earthworms are separated from the compost, and the completely digested vermicompost is stored in a safe place to maintain moisture and allow the growth of beneficial microbes.

The worm castings are rich in nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium, Hence, the addition of vermicompost to the fields helps in improving soil fertility, and obtaining good produce.
