Explain types of osmotic solutions.
Dear Garima,
There are three different types of solutions :
1. Isotonic Solutions
An isotonic solution has the same concentration of solutes both inside and outside the cell i.e. a cell with the same concentration of salt inside it as in the surrounding water/fluid would be said to be in an isotonic solution. There is no net movement of solvent as the amount of water entering and exiting the cell’s membrane is equal.
2. Hypotonic Solutions
In a hypotonic solution, there is a higher concentration of solutes inside the cell than outside the cell. So more solvent will enter the cell than leave it ,to balance out the concentration of solute. If a cell is placed in Hypotonic solution, it will take in water and become Turgid.
Example: when raisin is placed in water ,water enters the raisin making it turgid.
3. Hypertonic Solutions
A hypertonic solution is the opposite of a hypotonic solution. Concentration of solute outside the cell is more than inside it. In this type of solution, more solvent will exit the cell than enter it in order to lower the concentration of solute outside the cell.
Example: When a grape is placed in this solution, water will move out of the grapes.
