Explain the ways in which glucose is broken down in absence or shortage of oxygen.

Given below is the schematic flow chart showing the breakdown of glucose.

In the absence of oxygen, glucose will convert into ethyl alcohol or ethanol with the release of energy. For example, yeast, in the absence of oxygen, converts sugar molecules into ethanol in the process known as fermentation.

In the lack of oxygen, in muscle cells, the oxygen molecule gets converted into lactic acid. Its accumulation can cause cramps in athletes.
