Explain the term concrete.

Concrete is a Heterogeneous mixture of cement, fine aggregates (sand) and coarse aggregates mixed with water which hardens with time. It is basically used as a construction material.

Concrete technology deals with the study of the properties of concrete and its practical applications.

Properties:

  1. Mechanical strength: Concrete has high mechanical strength.
  2. Durability: Concrete is well-suited for structures exposed to demanding and extreme conditions like frost, rain atmospheric pollution, etc.
  3. Porosity and density: The denser (or the less porous) the concrete the better its performance and the greater its durability.

Uses:

Concrete is used to make various structures like

  1. Construction of Dams
  2. Residential Buildings.
  3. Commercial Buildings.
  4. Roads
  5. Marine Construction.
  6. Sewers.
  7. Foundations, etc.

[Extra information: Heterogeneous mixture is a mixture containing two or more substances mixed together, non-uniformly. As in concrete, the individual components can be seen separately and they are not uniformly distributed throughout the mixture, hence they are known as a Heterogeneous mixture.]
