Explain the term Tonsils.

Tonsils are a pair of soft tissue clusters of lymph cells in the throat (pharynx) at the opening of either side of the throat.

Along with adenoids, tonsils are part of the lymphatic system, which helps to fight infections, by trapping the germs coming in through the mouth and nose. They keep body fluids in balance and also filter bacteria and viruses.

Tonsils may seem large in children, but when a person becomes an adult, they become smaller in size.

Tonsils are present in three sets, they are:-

1. The Pharyngeal Tonsils (Adenoids).

2. The Palatine Tonsils. (generally referred to as Tonsils)

3. The Lingual Tonsils.
