Explain The Process Of Breathing In Insects

  • Dear Yashvi,
  •  As we breathe through lungs, insects breathe through a network of tiny tubes called tracheae.
  • These are of air-filled internal tubes,  the finer branches of which extends to all parts of the body and may become functionally intracellular in muscle fibers.
  • Air enters the tubes through a row of holes along an insect's abdomen.
  • The air then diffuses down the blind-ended tracheae. Thus oxygen is carried in the gas phase directly to its sites of utilization.
  • The biggest Insects have the longest tracheae as they  need the more oxygen to be able to breathe.
