Explain the phenomenon of “biological magnification.” How does it affect organisms belonging to different tropic levels particularly the tertiary consumers?
Biological Magnification: The process of increase in the concentration of toxic entities or chemicals with an increase in trophic level in a food chain is known as biological magnification.
When harmful or toxic substances like DDT or another pesticide sprinkled over the plants kill pests on the plants and enter the food chain.
These plants absorb harmful chemicals from the soil along with water and minerals. Thus, they enter the food chain at the producer or initial level and transfer to the next trophic level. Tertiary consumers get a higher concentration of toxic chemicals accumulation.
