Explain the concept of nutrients in animals.
Nutrient is a substance that provides nourishment to the body. Nutrients help in the growth and survival of the organisms. The process of obtaining or providing the nutrients is known as nutrition. Animals show heterotrophic mode of nutrition, i.e. they depend on plants and other animals for nutritional requirements.
Heterotrophic nutrition in animals is further classified into-
i) Holozoic nutrition- In holozoic nutrition, organisms feed by ingesting solid material, and later digesting them in the digestive tract. Examples include- humans, animals, insectivorous plants.
ii) Parasitism- This type of nutrition is seen in some cyclostomes like lampreys. Lampreys live as parasites on other fish and absorb nutrients from the host.
