Explain the addition and subtraction of integers with examples.

Addition of integers:

The addition of integers means there are three possibilities. They are :

  • The addition between two positive numbers,

The addition of two positive integers always gives a positive integer

For example, $2+3=5$.

  • The addition between two negative numbers and

The addition of two negative integers always give a negative integer

For example, $-2+(-3)=-(2+3)=-5$.

  • The addition between a positive number and a negative number.

To add integers with different signs, keep the sign of the number with the largest absolute value and subtract the smallest absolute value from the largest

For example, $-10+8=-(10-8)=-2$.

Subtraction of Integers:

Transform the subtraction of integers problem into the addition of integers problem.

  • First, keep the first number.
  • Second, change the operation from subtraction to addition.
  • Third, get the opposite sign of the second number.
  • Finally, proceed with the regular addition of integers.

For example,

$9-(-7)=9+(+7)=9+7=16$.
