Explain the acidic solution and the basic solution.
An acid is a chemical substance with sour taste.
• Acidic Substances are the substances that contain acid in them.
• Acid turns blue litmus paper to red. Acid is a substance that contains hydrogen ion (H+).
• Acids do not give color with phenolphthalein indicator and do not absorb carbon dioxide gas. Also, acids do not react with ammonium salt. Natural Acids are the acids that occur in nature, such as, acids present in fruits.
• Acids are generally found in lemons, vinegar, tamarind, curd, spinach, citrus fruits such as oranges, amla, grapes, unripe mangoes, etc.
A base is a chemical substance that is bitter in taste and soapy to touch.
• Basic Substances are the substances that contain a base in them. They contain hydroxyl ion (OH-). Bases are also called Alkaline.
• Base turns red litmus paper to blue. It gives pink colour with phenolphthalein indicator
• Some bases like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) absorbs carbon dioxide gas. Bases reacts with ammonium salt to give ammonia gas
• Bases are found in different substances such as bleach, soap, ammonia, washing powder, lime water, window cleaner, Milk of Magnesia.
