Explain how painting of the iron gate prevents it from rusting?

The iron reacts with water and oxygen to form a ferrous oxide, which we see as rust.

Iron + water + oxygen → ferrous oxide.

2Fe + 2H2O + O2      2Fe(OH)2 (Rust)

Thus, For rusting to take place, iron must be in contact with both air and moisture. When the iron gate is painted, the layer of paint prevents the contact of iron with air and moisture and so there is no rusting.
