Explain gravitational force.

Gravity, or gravitation, is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light are attracted or pulled towards one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and the Moon's gravity causes the ocean tides.

Some examples of the force of gravity include the force that holds the gases of earth's atmosphere, the gases in the sun, gases in the stars. The force that causes an object you throw in the air to come down again. The force that causes a vehicle to move downhill even when you aren't stepping on the accelerator.

Newton's law of universal gravitation is usually stated as that every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.

Newton discovered gravity when he observed an apple fall on his head. Newton's universal law of gravitation describes the properties of the gravitational force.
