We have to find both the parts.

Solution :

Let the two numbers be x and y.

The larger part exceeds the smaller part by 12.

$x = y+12$

$x+y = 72$

$y+12+y =72$

$2y = 72-12$

$2y = 60$

$y = \frac{60}{2}$

$y = 30$

$x = 30+12$

$x = 42$

The parts are 42 and 30.
