The difference between the root system and the shoot system are as follows:

Root System Shoot System
The root system is composed of roots, tubers, and rhizoids of the plant. The shoot system is composed of leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits of the plant.
This part of the plant grows below the ground. This part of the plant grows above the ground.
Functions include absorbing water and minerals from the ground and providing support to the plant on the ground. Photosynthesis, transport of materials, and reproduction are important functions.
It cannot be used as timber. It can be used as timber.
The root system store food and restores nutrients from the soil.
Stems support the plant and house the xylem and phloem.
