A cation is a positively charged ion. It has more protons than electrons, consequently giving it a net positive charge. For a cation to form, one or more electrons must be lost from the metal atom. These cations are attracted towards the negative charge cathode during the electrolysis process. 

Examples: Sodium (Na+), Iron (Fe2+)
