Define resistance. Give its S.I. unit.


Resistance is the property of a conductor due to which it opposes the flow of current through it. Its S.I unit is ohm $(\Omega)$.

Explanation

The electric current is a flow of electrons through a conductor. When these electrons move from one part of the conductor to another, they collide with other electrons and with the atoms and ions present in the conductor. These collisions cause some obstruction or opposition to the flow of current through the conductor, which is known as resistance. The S.I unit of resistance is ohm, denoted by symbol $(\Omega)$.

The resistance of a conductor is equal to the ratio of potential difference across its ends to the current flowing through it. That is-

$Resistance=\frac {Potential\ difference}{Current}$, or

$R=\frac {V}{I}$
