Define: (i) Hypertonic solution (ii) Hypotonic solution


(i) Hypertonic solution: The solution outside the cell has a higher solute concentration than inside the cell. The water molecules move outside the cell from inside. It is called exosmosis.

A plant cell undergoes plasmolysis after putting in a hypertonic solution.


(ii) Hypotonic solution: The solution outside the cell has a lower solute concentration than inside the cell. The water molecules move inside the cell from outside. It is called endosmosis.

A plant cell becomes turgid after putting in a hypotonic solution.
