Define ginning of cotton.

The process of separating fibres from the seeds of cotton is called ginning of cotton. In this process, impurities like dust, stones or wooden particles are also removed.

[Extra information: Given below are the steps used in this process:

1. Separation of the seeds and lint from the fibres: Cotton bolls are plucked manually from the field. It is then made to pass through the gin or a roller having inverted hooks. This ensures the removal of seeds and lint from the cotton bolls.

2. Incline cleaner stage: The moisture content of the cotton is measured which helps to know and determine the amount of heat that is needed to open the fibre. Air is mixed with the seed of cotton in this stage. Any impurities are removed and sent to a waste pile.

3. Formation of cotton seed oil: In this stage, an additional cleaning takes place. Also, a cotton gin stand is used to remove the seed from the lint by sawblades. The seeds are then crushed for cottonseed oil.

4. Bale formation: A final cleaning is done at the gin stand and all the impurities are removed. It is then hydraulically pressed into 500 pond blocks called bales. Every bale of ginned cotton is tested for key characteristics like fibre length, colour, strength, etc. and each bale is banded and wrapped, ready to be sent to the market.]
