Define evolution. How does it occur? Describe how fossils provide us evidences in support of evolution.

Evolution can be defined as the process of gradual changes that taken place in organisms over years under which new species of an organism have developed.

Organisms of different species evolved during the course of evolution. Classification defines as the grouping of organisms into groups and subgroups based on their similarities, functionalities, and structural formations.

The common characteristics present in organisms of two different species can be closely related and they can share a common ancestor.

Fossils are defined as the remnants or traces of dead plants and animals that died more than 10,000 years ago.

Fossils are mainly formed when plants and animals die in watery environments or buried in mud and silt. Soft tissues decompose quickly leaving the hard bones or shells afterward.  As time passes, sediment accumulates over it and hardens to form rock. These fossils provide us evidence related to evolution.

For example, archeopteryx acts as a connecting link between aves and reptiles.

The study of fossils is known as Palaeontology. It determines the age of fossils through the carbon dating method.
