Define cell membrane

The cell membrane is also known as the plasma membrane. It is the outermost layer or the boundary of a cell. It separates the cell from the external environment. The cell membrane is a porous structure that allows only the useful substances to enter the cell and not the unwanted materials. Hence, the cell membrane is termed as a selectively permeable membrane.
