The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is a government agency operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India. IMD is responsible for undertaking meteorological observations, communications, weather forecasting, and weather services. IMD is headquartered in Delhi and its regional offices are located in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Guwahati, and New Delhi.
IMD provides services for observations, communications, forecasts, and weather. In partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation, the IMD monitors the weather in the Indian subcontinent using the IRS series and the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT). IMD was the first weather bureau of a developing nation to create and operate its own satellite system.
IMD is one of the six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres of the World Meteorological Organization's Tropical Cyclone Programme of the World Weather Watch. It is the regional focal point for forecasting, identifying, and broadcasting tropical cyclone warnings in the northern Indian Ocean.
In January of 2016, the IMD launched the System of Aerosol Monitoring and Research (SAMAR) to examine the concentration of black carbon, the radiative properties of aerosols, environmental visibility, and their climatological effects. A network of 16 aethalometers, 12 sky radiometers, and 12 nephelometers would be included.
