Classify the following fibers as natural or synthetic:
nylon, wool, cotton, silk, polyester, jute.
The fibres obtained from nature (plants and animals) are called natural fibres.
Examples are cotton from cotton bolls, jute from the jute plant, silk from the cocoon of the silkworm, and wool from the hair of animals like sheep or goats.
Synthetic fibres are also known as man-made fibres which are made up of small units of chemical substances which are joined together.
Example: Rayon and Nylon are synthetic fibres.
Rayon is obtained by the chemical treatment of wood pulp or cellulose.
Nylon is the first fully synthetic fibre. It was prepared from coal, water, and air.
Polyester is also a synthetic fabric as it is prepared artificially.

[Extra Information:
Synthetic fibres are more durable than natural fibres. They are generally unaffected by living and micro-Organisms. Extreme harsh environmental conditions like UV rays and Sunlight degrades them over a longer period of time.
Synthetic fibres like nylon are used to make ropes as it has high tensile strength and can be stretched easily. Moreover, they are also used in making Raincoats as they are waterproof.]
