Calculate the moment of a force of 16 N about an axis of rotation at a normal distance of $ 0.5 \mathrm{~m} $ from the force.
The moment of force or torque is the measurement of the effect that the turning force applies to the system.
It is equal to the product of the magnitude of the force and the perpendicular distance of the line of action of the force from the axis of rotation.
The moment or torque formula is given by-
$\tau =F\times d$
Where,
F is the force applied, d is the distance from the fixed axis, $\tau$ is the Moment of force/ torque expressed in newton meter (Nm).
Here in the question-
Given:
Force = 16 N
Perpendicular distance = 0.5 m
Moment of force = ?
Substituting the given value in the moment formula we get-
$\tau =16\times 0.5$
$\tau =8Nm$
Hence, the moment of a force will be 8Nm.
