By selling an article for rupees 144 , a man loses 1/7 of his outlay. If it is sold for rupees 189 , what would be the gain or loss percent

Given :

By selling an article for rupees 144, a man loses $\frac{1}{7}$ of his outlay. It is sold for rupees 189.

To do :

We have to find the gain or loss percent.

Solution :

Let the cost price of article be $Rs.\ x$.

This implies,

SP $=$ CP $-$ Loss

$= x - \frac{x}{7}$

$= \frac{6x}{7}$

Therefore,

$\frac{6x}{7} = 144$

$x= \frac{144 \times 7}{6}$

$x= Rs.\ 168$

If the article is sold for Rs. 189, then,

SP $=Rs.\ 189$

Profit $=$ SP $-$ CP

$=189-168$

$=Rs.\ 21$

Gain $ \%=\frac{Gain}{CP}\times 100 \%$

$=\frac{21}{168}\times100 \%$

$=12.5 \%$

The gain percent is $12.5 \%$.
