Beera is a farmer. His field has black soil and the climate is warm. Which fibre yielding plant should he grow in his field?
  1. Jute
  2. Cotton
  3. Coconut
  4. Wool

Correct answer: (b) Cotton

Explanation: Cotton plants are usually grown at places having black soil and warm climate. Hence, they are also known as black cotton soil.

Properties:
The black cotton soil looks dark in color. It has the characteristic phenomenon of swelling when wet and shrinking when dry. So, these soils expand and become sticky during the rainy season and contract during the dry season causing deep cracks into the soil.
They are calcareous, high in carbon exchange capacity, and low in organic matter.
These soils are comparatively less fertile on the uplands than on the lowlands.
They retain moisture in high content and are fine-grained dark color soil. They contain high levels of Calcium, Magnesium, and Carbonate. All these are required by the cotton plant for its growth.

Location in India:
Black soil is present in parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Western parts of Madhya Pradesh, North-Western Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand up to Raj Mahal hills.
