Why is an atom neutral inspite of the presence of charged particles in it?

An atom consists of protons that are positively charged, neutrons that are neutral, and electrons that are negatively charged. The number of electrons is the same as the number of protons. Hence, the two opposite charges balance each other and the atom remains neutral.
