Give a reason for the following observations.
(a) Naphthalene balls disappear with time without leaving any solid.
(b) We can get the smell of perfume sitting several meters away.

(a) Naphthalene balls kept in stored clothes in our homes disappear over a period of time because they undergo sublimation and form naphthalene vapours, which disappear into the air.

(b) The smell of perfume reaches several meters away, as the particles of perfume (gas) have more kinetic energy and hence the rate of diffusion is more.

[Extra information: Anything that occupies space and has mass is known as Matter.

Following are the three basic states of Matter:

Solid

Liquid

Gas

Particles of matter have space between them they attract each other.

The particles of matter are very, very small.

The particles of matter have space between them.

The particles of matter are constantly moving.

The particles of matter attract each other.

Most matter consists of mixtures of pure substances, which can be homogeneous (uniform in composition) or heterogeneous (different regions possess different compositions and properties).
