(a) With the help of a labeled ray diagram show the path followed by a narrow beam of monochromatic light when it passes through a glass prism.(b) What would happen if this beam is replaced by a narrow beam of white light?

(a) The labeled ray diagram given below, showing the path followed by a narrow beam of monochromatic light when it passes through a glass prism.

When a narrow beam of monochromatic light passes through a glass prism, it gets deviated from the actual path due to refraction but it will not show the dispersion of light. Also, the direction of the incident ray and emergent ray of light is not parallel to each other.

(b) The labeled ray diagram given below, showing the path followed by a narrow beam of white light when it passes through a glass prism.

When a narrow beam of white light passes through a glass prism, it gets dispersed into its seven colour components of the spectrum of light, which is known as dispersion. Also, the direction of the incident rays and emergent rays are not parallel to each other.
