(a) What is the difference between static friction and sliding friction? For a given pair of objects, which of the two is greater?
(b) How can a very heavy machine be moved conveniently from one place to another in a factory? (No crane is available for this purpose).

(a). Difference between static friction and sliding friction:-

1. Static friction:

This friction occurs when a body rests on the ground. For example, while trekking, the friction between your shoe and the ground helps in climbing the mountain.

2. Sliding friction:

This friction occurs when a body slides on the ground. For example, while writing with a pencil the pencil lead slides on the paper. The friction between lead and the paper is good enough to leave a watermark on the paper.

For a given pair of objects, static friction is always greater than sliding friction.

(b). By placing the round-shaped wood logs under heavy machines and pushing them with hands makes it much easier to move heavy machines from one place to another place in a factory. As wood logs act as roller and rolling friction is much less than static and sliding friction.
