(a) What is sonar? Explain its use.
(b) A sonar station picks up a return signal after 3 seconds. How far away is the object? (Speed of sound in water$=1440\ m/s$).
(a). SONAR stands for:
S$\rightarrow$Sound
N$\rightarrow$Navigation
A$\rightarrow$And
R$\rightarrow$Ranging.
So, full name of SONAR is Sound Navigation And Ranging.
SONAR is device which is used to find the depth of a sea or to locate the underwater things like shoals of fish, shipwrecks and enemy submarines.
(b). Time taken to listen to the return signal $=3\ s$
Speed of the sound in water $v=1440\ m/s$
So, the distance will be $=\frac{speed\times time}{2}$ [Because sound takes $3\ s$ to reach, then return back]
$=\frac{1440\times3}{2}$
$=2160\ m$
Thus, the object is $2160\ m$ far.
